Top 10 Computers For Music Production In 2021!

Top 10 Computers For Music Production In 2021!

by Oracle Blog

Looking for a computer for music production has a lot of details & considerations. There’s so many options on the market & it can become overwhelming. There are also different computers & brands that work better depending on someone’s needs, preferences, & brand loyalty – so because of that we’re not putting any of these computers in any particular order or ranking.

How To Choose Your Computer For Music Production

  • Your budget – Knowing what your budget is will determine what your specs & configurations can be & it also may impact the brand you choose.
  • Mac vs. PC? This is always a big topic of debate & we’re not on either side. We have people at SoundOracle.net that use both! The brand you use won’t make your beats or mixes sound any better or worse & it’s purely preference. We usually suggest sticking with what you know. If you have years of experience working with MacOs & you know the operating system very well, then we suggest not giving up all of the experience & knowledge. Same with Windows. There’s a lot of value in working with an OS that you know how to use very well. One thing to consider though is what DAW are you using. Some DAWs only work on a certain OS.
  • What DAW are you using? Do you have your digital audio workstation picked out yet? If so, this may steer you towards choosing between Mac or PC. If you’re planning on using Garageband or Logic you’ll have to go with Mac since those software only work on MacOs.
  • Laptop vs. Desktop – One of the biggest deciding factors for a laptop vs. desktop choice is if you’re planning on traveling or performing live a lot. If you need to be mobile, a laptop is the best route to go. If you’re planning on keeping your computer in your studio at all times, then going with a desktop might be better. The advantage of a desktop is not having to worry about having a battery heating up your computer & taking up space inside of the casing.

Our Recommendations For Tech Specs In 2021

  • Processors – Quad core should be considered the bare minimum when it comes to music production, but we suggest at least a 6-core these days.
  • RAM – Even a few years ago 16GB was the minimum suggestion; however, with how powerful VSTs & updates to DAWs have become, 32GB is our new recommendation, but 64GB might be soon around the corner & worth considering.
  • Storage – We suggest at least 500GB of SSD storage. If you’re able to afford more then you should definitely go for more. You’re going to need it eventually with all of your VSTs & sound packs from SoundOracle.net
  • Display Size – If you’re working on a laptop, you’ll want at least 13”, but you’d be surprised how much difference an extra inch or two can make when working inside your DAW.

Lots of producers, engineers, & artists swear by Mac computers & won’t use anything else. We’re not here to debate which one is better – but if you’re a fan of Mac – this 16” is a great starting point. This computer has processing power that can sustain high performance tasks for long periods of time & has excellent performance for content creation & music production. The addition of the touch bar in recent years allows for useful shortcuts & quick commands. If you’re a Logic Pro user, the touch bar will be extra handy because it turns into a mixer with faders & knobs. MacOs also has an elegant look & it’s easy to use. Not to mention that free OS upgrades for life are also a nice feature to have.

CONS

  • Very hard to upgrade your specs after you purchase it.
  • Starts off expensive & can get even more expensive when adding better specs.
  • Lack of ports & does not have ports for USB, HDMI, SD, or ethernet.

If you just need a computer to produce on & do some moderate mixes on, this Dell laptop can get the job done & has some pretty decent specs. The price point isn’t too bad either & the HD screen will give you some nice resolution on screen. Plus, this screen is designed to look great at all angels & distances; even if you’re looking down on it or from a side view. Having both SSD & HDD storage offers a high speed storage system for files you need access to on the regular as well another drive that’s great for storage. It does include a DVD drive, so if you work with DVDs a lot or need to burn them on the regular it will be handy, but otherwise we feel the drive takes up unnecessary space & could be better fit for more battery cells onboard.

CONS

  • Not ideal for gaming or large sessions with lots of heavy plugins
  • Physical design is bulky & not aesthetically pleasing
  • Keyboard isn’t backlit
  • Built in DVD drive takes up unnecessary space adds weight

Sleek design with solid performance. 64GB of RAM will allow you to have quick access to applications while the SSD storage gives you reliable performance when accessing files & applications. It does come with a lot of preinstalled “bloatware” so you may need to delete those applications when 1st get your computer to have more storage & higher performance.

CONS

  • Low battery life & becomes weaker quickly
  • Battery takes a long time to fully charge
  • Loud fan
  • Low amount of onboard USB ports

Stylish & portable this PC laptop is also packed with some pretty impressive specs right out of the box. One of the coolest things about this computer is it’s “Adaptive Thermal” technology. Which changes temperatures when it detects your hands on it, it’s on your lap, or on a desk. The display looks great & clear & it allows you to tilt it back to a 135 degree angle.

CONS

  • Average battery life that weakens over time
  • Battery life is poor
  • Fans are constant & loud
  • Trackpad can be inaccurate at times
 Apple 27” iMac

  • Up to 8TB SSD or 4TB Fusion Storage
  • 27” 5K display
  • MacOs
  • USB-C, USB, & SD ports
  • Starting at $1,799

This iMac model made our list last year; however, due to the pandemic, Apple gave this a nice little upgrade over the summer. The update comes with higher specs out of the box & allows for higher-spec upgrades than what was allowed before. They also upgraded the webcam to 1080p for higher resolution when having video meetings.

If you’re in the market for a new Mac & don’t need to travel with it, this is definitely the one we recommend. The giant 27” display is gorgeous & comes in handy. This computer not only looks good but performs at a high rate as well. Maxing this computer out with all the tech specs will allow you to handle any production task you throw at it. It’s pretty quiet too & ideal for studio environments. This particular Mac is one of the few Apple products that allow you to upgrade the RAM by yourself. There’s a compartment in the back that pops open & lets you add more RAM. We recommended saving some money & buying your RAM 3rd party instead of buying it at the Apple Store.

CONS

  • Hard to upgrade your processor & internal storage after you purchase it.
  • Starts off expensive & can get even more expensive when adding better specs.
  • Is not ideal for portable setups.
  • Lacks height adjustment & tilt screen has limits for adjusting.
 HP Envy 17t 17.3”

 HP Envy 17t 17.3”

  • 17.3″ Full HD display
  • 17.3″ Full HD display
  • Windows 10
  • HDMI, USB, & SD ports
  • $1,879.99

This laptop has a good look & a great display at 4k resolution and that fact that it’s a 17” is a big plus! There aren’t too many 17” screens on the market these days, so it’s always worth looking at when one is available. The graphic performance is pretty solid too, so it will be able to handle the GUI of your plugins & VST instruments. The out of box specs should be able to handle most moderate to average sessions, but you may need to eventually upgrade some of the specs if you’re looking to get in more intense mixing sessions that require lots of plugins & processing.

CONS

  • Doesn’t include charger
  • No USB-C ports
  • Heavy in weight (over 6 lbs)
  • Poorly constructive trackpad
 Lenovo IdeaPad Flex 15

 Lenovo IdeaPad Flex 15

  • 32GB RAM
  • 2 TB SSD
  • 15.6” HD display
  • Windows 10
  • HDMI, USB, & USB-C ports
  • $1,279

The IdeaPad is a 2-in-1 machine; it’s a laptop that can quickly be turned into a tablet. It offers touchscreen functions & flexibility to adjusting the position of the screen. One thing to watch out for is that the laptop portion of this machine does work significantly better than the tablet portion, so when you’re working on intense sessions that require a lot of CPU power, it will be best to work with it in laptop mode. Surprisingly for a 2-in-1 machine the battery life is actually pretty solid.

CONS

  • Quad-core processors may not be powerful enough for today’s production tasks.
  • Loud fans
  • Limited selection of ports.
  • Easy to throttle the CPU & limit the performance
  • The tablet portion performs significantly lower than the laptop portion
TUF By ASUS Dash F15 3060

  • 40 GB Ram
  • 2 TB SSD
  • 15.6” HD display
  • Windows 10
  • USB-C, USB, & SD ports
  • $1,399

One of the great things about this machine is that not only are the specs strong, but so is the battery life. A lot of laptops have poor battery life, so a machine like this is perfect for producers who are on the go a lot. With 40GB of RAM you should be able to access applications fairly quickly; however, the processor does show it’s limits when demanding applications have been running for a while, so it may be worth investing in a higher processor eventually like an 8-core.

CONS

  • Gets hot during regular tasks.
  • Processor shows it’s limits with demanding applications
  • Processor shows it’s limits with demanding applications
  • No webcam
  • Graphics under perform at times
  Apple Mac Pro

Chances are this computer is out of your price range. In fact, the price of this machine really gets people worked up & brings in lots of debate & emotion; however, it was never Apple’s intention to make this computer as something the general public would purchase. This computer is intended for the likes of top industry people like Mike Dean, Dr. Dre, or Chris Lord Alge and hey, there is a market for customers like that! This computer still makes our list because it is technically the best machine money can buy currently & the title of this article is “Top 10 Computers For Music Production.” We put it very last on our list though because of the price.

This desktop computer is built around a stainless steel space frame. There is an aluminum housing that lifts off, allowing 360‑degree access to every component and vast configuration. It’s also very easy to upgrade at any time. The Mac Pro is designed for pros who need the ultimate in CPU performance. This is ideal for intense production rendering, to playing hundreds of virtual instruments to simulating the most intense graphic usage.

CONS

  • Very expensive & can costs over $50,000 when fully maxed out
  • Does not include a display
